From 2027, electronic invoicing will become mandatory for domestic B2B transactions in Slovakia. This change represents one of the most significant steps in the digital transformation of financial processes in the country. However, the introduction of e-Invoicing is not merely a legislative requirement-it fundamentally changes the way invoices are generated, exchanged, validated and processed in corporate systems.
What the new framework requires
Under the new legislation, invoices will need to be issued and exchanged in a structured electronic format, compliant with the European standard EN 16931. This means that traditional formats such as PDF files sent via e-mail will no longer meet the requirements. Instead, invoices will be transmitted as machine-readable XML documents that can be automatically processed by ERP and accounting systems. The change will also impact companies currently using EDI invoicing via EDIFACT, as these messages will likely need to be mapped or converted to an EN 16931-compliant structure before submission to the national e-Invoicing infrastructure, although the final approach in this area is still being defined.
The Slovak model will rely on the Peppol network, a standardized European infrastructure for the secure exchange of electronic business documents. Peppol ensures interoperability between different systems, provides guaranteed delivery and enables standardized document formats such as Peppol BIS 3, which forms the technical basis for structured e-Invoices.
In Slovakia, the upcoming e-Invoicing framework also introduces specific regulatory requirements for service providers that will facilitate the exchange of electronic invoices with the state infrastructure. Providers must obtain certification as a Slovak Digital Postman (Certified Delivery Service Provider for Electronic Invoicing Operating in the Territory of the Slovak Republic), a status granted only to platforms that meet strict technical, security, interoperability, and reliability standards defined by the authorities. This certification ensures that transmitted documents comply with national specifications and can be securely delivered within the official e-Invoicing ecosystem.
